Westie’s Blog ….. busy week!

Hi I’m Westie the Westmorland Bear a permanent member of the team here at the hotel. I have had such a busy week, firstly I helped our photographer Ben Barden www.benbarden.co.uk with some new pictures for the hotel and boy was that hard work, with all that camera gear to carry around I was worn out. Then the nice chaps from the lift company came to do a service on the lift, so obviously I lent a hand there.

With all this hard work and the arrival of a new hot tub for one of our soon to be finished feature rooms I’m looking forward to the weekend off , or perhaps a pamper at Oxley’s or a nice swim in our pool to chill out…. it’s hard work being a hotel Bear!!

Mum’s The Word

Why not treat Mum to a fabulous Sunday lunch. Bookings now being taken for Mothering Sunday, the 10th of March.Our 3 course lunch is served 12 until 2pm and is just £15.95 per person. Children under 12 can eat from our special kids menu. Give Mum a break on her exclusive day, a complimentary glass of fizz for all Mums with lunch and a £10 Oxley’s voucher towards an indulgent pmper treatment.

Half Term Happenings

School half term already! We are almost saying goodbye to February! We have had some wonderful weather recently proper spring days it’s been great to be out and about. Mike our head chef and Gerry our full time joiner had a great time on their ‘Boys Walk’ yesterday through the Newlands valley near Braithwaite and along Hindscarth Edge to finish with a well earned pint.

We have some new and ‘shocking’ news for you …. in our support of a greener community we are pleased to announce the installation of two electric car charge points. One is situated at the front of the hotel with a handy pull in parking place and the other is situated in the covered car park by the lodges. We hope that it’s an ‘electrfiying ‘success and not a ‘shock’ to anyone!!

Who Stole January!

We can’t quite belive we are in February already (come on own up who stole January from us!) Valentines is coming up for all you old romantics out there and half term is just round the corner. We have had a little snow which does look picture perfect on the fells and of course last weekend we had the Big Chill Swim at Lowwood Bay. Over 200 swimmers braved the chilly lake and donned their goggles, hats but not their wetsuits and plunged in to Lake Windermere. The event attracted a whole range of swimmers form as far a field as Canada, Russia & Latvia and of course our own swimmers Mike D (our Head Chef) and Mike H (our plumber/maintenance man). We think they are all a bit billy bonkers for competing but the atmosphere and organisation was amazing and a great day was had by all …. well done to our own Big Fish the two Mikes! Brrrrrrr…….

January….

A bit of a belated Happy New Year! Not quite sure whta has happened to January it’s almost come and gone! We have been busy firstlt with our fabulous Westmorland Club post Christmas Party weekend . Those Clubbers who couldn’t manage to to get away in December enjoyed a great weekend, good food, good company and good entertainment a all round good time was had by all.

Then we had the ‘Bond’ dinner (no not the 007 kind!) a local tradition over 200 years old, local villagers or Bondsmen would be responsible for law and order of course we have no need these days but the traditon of meeting up for a meal and roll call still carries on.Ambleside is one of just a handful of Bond’s still up and running if only socially!

Lots of guest’s taking advanatage of our winter rates so the hotel is ticking over nicely, we are keeping our painter busy by giving the back stairs a make over

Busy now finishing our new room and Dance Studio for guest’s and gym members watch out for classes and imformation soon!

A Fond Farewell to John

John Waddilove one our hard working Kitchen Porter’s finally hung up his rubber gloves for good, John has worked for Westmorland Hotels since 1997 when he started at the Red Lion.After a semi retirement he missed us all so much he came back to work at the Sally in 1999! We had a little send off for John with fizz and cake and presented him with a case of his favourite tipple and a stack of books on motorbikes to keep him busy! John hopes to spend more time on his beloved motorbike and hopes to walk around Britain as another of his hobbies is walking. We really do wish him a long and very happy retirement and many thanks for all his hard work over the years!

All the very best John…. we hope he enjoys his Guinness cheers!

Westmorland Club Weekend

We are getting ready for yet another fabulous Westmorland Club Christmas Party weekend! Everyone is due to arrive tonight to chill out and relax and tomorrow perhaps a little shopping, walking or just a dip in the pool! Saturday night is our party night with fizz, nibbles, festive food and entertainment from David Ford.Guest’s can enjoy a fantastic Sunday lunch before departure….. going to be a good one!

It’s beginning to feel a lot like Christmas….

What a fantastic weekend the Lantern parade and light switch on was amazing, lots going on in the village with stalls, crafts, entertainment even a ice rink! The parade it’s self was fabulous lots of imaginative lantern creations, and hundreds of people joined in locals and visitors alike. Father Christmas even brought a few Reindeer along, a great time was had by all and to finis off the day a spectacular firework display in Rothay Park. Guest’s enjoyed mulled wine and candy floss and a birds eye view from the front of the hotel. We think the coint down to Christmas really has begun!
